Devotional Topic: Living for God’s Will, Not Our Own
READ: John 5:24-47
Verse of the Day: John 5:30
Devotional Message:
(John 5:30)
"By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me."
Observation:
In this verse, Jesus reveals something profound about His mission and mindset. Even though He is the Son of God, He says, “By myself I can do nothing.” Jesus acknowledges His complete dependence on God the Father, emphasizing that everything He does is rooted in listening to and obeying God. He is not here to carry out His own desires or make decisions based on personal gain. Instead, Jesus is committed to one purpose: to please God who sent Him.
Imagine the humility and trust this takes. Jesus could have relied on His own authority, but He chose to act in total alignment with God’s will. By doing so, He shows us the importance of surrendering our own plans, desires, and even judgments to God. Jesus only seeks to judge and act as God leads Him. This means that His actions are completely just and fair because they reflect God’s perfect wisdom and love.
For us, this verse challenges us to think about who we are trying to please and who we rely on for direction. It’s easy to get caught up in what we want, or what makes us look good to others. But Jesus points us to a different approach—one that is based on following God’s guidance rather than seeking to please ourselves.
Application:
This message of following God’s will instead of our own can have a big impact on our daily lives. Here are a few ways we can live out this truth:
1. Seek God’s Guidance in Every Decision – It can be tempting to make choices based on what feels best to us. However, Jesus reminds us that God’s way is always best, even if it isn’t the easiest. When we face choices, big or small, let’s pause to ask God for His wisdom. This might mean taking time to pray and truly listen for His direction, or seeking wise counsel that points us to God.
2. Let Go of People-Pleasing – Many of us spend a lot of energy trying to please others or worrying about what people think. Jesus’ words remind us that our first priority is to please God. When we do this, our hearts find peace, and our actions carry greater purpose. Instead of living for the approval of others, let’s live for God’s approval.
3. Trust God’s Wisdom Over Our Own – Jesus shows us that true wisdom comes from God. There will be times when God’s path might seem confusing, and our own desires may pull us in a different direction. When this happens, remember Jesus’ example of surrender. Just as He trusted God fully, we are called to trust that God knows what’s best, even when we don’t fully understand.
4. Live Justly by Reflecting God’s Heart – Jesus says His “judgment is just” because He follows God’s lead. For us, this means that as we seek to please God, we should treat people with fairness, compassion, and respect. Instead of judging others based on our own standards, let’s reflect God’s love and grace in how we respond to others.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for showing us the perfect example of Jesus, who followed Your will above His own. Help us to trust You more deeply and to seek Your guidance in all we do. Let us live in a way that pleases You, not ourselves or others. Give us wisdom and strength to walk in Your ways. Amen.
