“God’s Amazing Grace (Eph. 2:1-10)” Dr. Tim Carns April 23, 2023 Sunday Service
It was on New Years day exactly 250 years ago that the church was introduced to one of the most beloved English hymns ever penned. It was written by a former slave-ship captain whose life before Christ would have made even the most immoral of sailors blush. His name was John Newton; his hymn was Amazing Grace.

John Newton wrote this hymn some 25 years after his conversion. He was now a pastor and the poem came to him as he was preparing his message from 1 Chr 17:16 where David had said: “Who am I, O Yahweh God, and what is my house that You have brought me this far?” You see, those words resonated with Newton because he saw himself like David – an undeserving sinner who had committed terrible deeds and yet experienced the grace of God. So, he began with the words
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound
that saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found
Twas bind but now I see
Now, the original title Newton had given for this hymn was “Faith’s review and expectation.” And, after introducing it to his congregation, he said, “the Lord gives us many blessings but unless we are grateful for these, we lose much of the comfort from them.”
