Today is the Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time; and in the gospel, Jesus reminds his listeners: “Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile.”

At the time, the Pharisees and some scribes noticed that some of Jesus’s disciples ate “with unclean [or] unwashed hands.” These elders were very particular about tradition, and so they questioned Jesus for letting his disciples eat with “unclean” hands, meaning, for not teaching them to follow the tradition of the elders.
Friends, sometimes, we can be strict about external observances of what we consider divine rules. We condemn those who seem to ignore them. But are they really God’s commands or human precepts that we claim to be from God? Jesus is leading us back to the purity of faith.
