Payapang Daigdig by Himig Singers [lyric video]
Lloyd De Leon
Payapang Daigdig is undoubtedly one of the most popular tagalog 'Christmas hymn' to date. No collection of classic Filipino Christmas carols is ever complete without this song in it. It has even been regarded as the 'Silent Night' of the Philippines, though there is no clear reference about Christmas in the lyrics.
The fact is 'Payapang Daigdig' was not intended as a Christmas hymn. It was written by the Felipe de Leon one morning during the Second World War (1945) after witnessing the bombings that leveled the whole city of Manila.
The mood that Felipe wanted to imbue in the music and lyrics clearly resembles the atmosphere at the time when Christ was born in Bethlehem. There was peace and tranquility amidst uncertainty. It is probably how the early listeners were able to identify 'Payapang Daigdig' with Christmas.
This is the first video that I made from scratch since I could not find an image with a good resolution that would capture the true spirit of the song. I hope you enjoy it the way I enjoyed making it.
