"Promise Given, Promise Fulfilled" (Various Texts) Dr. Bebs Redulla December 22, 2024 Sunday Service
When does Christmas begin? The promise of a coming Messiah is consistently woven throughout the pages of the Old Testament. And the Jews were waiting and are still waiting for the Messiah to come.
It is written in their sacred scripture, the Tanakh which is basically the same as the Old Testament of the Christian Bible but arranged in a slightly different order. Christmas really began in the Old Testament.
Notice that the Old Testament ends where God does not speak to His people. After the book of Malachi was written, there was a gap of 400 years before the New Testament period began. This is known as the intertestamental period - the time between the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, when God did not speak and no new scripture was written. I believe it was for a purpose - to generate a longing for God’s return to his people. As the Jewish people were suffering in exile andtheir homeland was under foreign occupation, the promise of the restoration of Jerusalem and the coming of the Messiah grew. By the time the New Testament opens with the arrival of Jesus, Messianic hopes were at its peak!
