THE LORD REJOICES IN HIS PEOPLE | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (December 15, 2024)

Indeed, brothers and sisters! God came through the incarnation of Jesus, and through his resurrection and the gift of the Holy Spirit he is eternally with us. And for this consoling fact, we have reason to celebrate and rejoice.

In the gospel reading, the good news of God’s closeness to his people is proclaimed by John the Baptist. He assures his listeners that the Messiah will come, and he will baptize God’s people with the Holy Spirit and fire.

He teaches them to prepare by sharing their cloaks and food with those who have none. By not collecting more than what is prescribed. And by not extorting and falsely accusing anyone. These acts of justice, truth and charity bring true joy. And God rejoices in those who are just, true and charitable. If John were here, this is most likely what he would tell us given our situation today. Shall we heed his call, brothers and sisters?
