“The Transcendence and Immanence of God (Part 2) (Acts 17:22-34)” Pastor AJ Caparros March 26, 2023 Sunday Service
If you ask any Filipino on the street, “Is God great?” Almost all the time, that Filipino would say yes! “Is God great?” Of course! But what happens when you ask a follow up question: “Is God near?” Then it’s a different story. Most of the Filipinos you meet will not question the greatness of God, but they do wonder why He seems so far. Most Filipinos still operate on the framework of the transcendent Bathala and the immanent anitos. Almost all Filipinos believe in God; believe that He’s great; believe that He reigns supreme in heaven. But He is not near. You need multiple mediators (or backers) to reach God. Filipinos don’t go directly to God. They go to the “backers” who are near God.

How about you? You probably believe that God is great, do you really believe that God is near you? In Acts 17, Paul declared to the Athenians that God is both great and near! His sermon in Athens continues to be relevant for us today.
