Daily Bread Devotional:
Devotional Topic: "OUR CHOICES MATTER"
Verse of the Day: Genesis 39:8
Devotional Message:
(Genesis 39:8)
"But he refused."
Observation:
The story of Joseph is one of the most powerful testimonies in Scripture about integrity, faithfulness, and trust in God through difficult situations. In Genesis 39, we find Joseph working in the house of Potiphar, an Egyptian official. Even though he had been betrayed by his brothers and sold as a slave, Joseph remained faithful to God and worked with excellence. As a result, Potiphar put him in charge of his entire household.
But just when things seemed to be going well for Joseph, temptation came knocking.
Potiphar’s wife began to desire him. Day after day, she tried to seduce him, offering him pleasure and secrecy. Think about how difficult this must have been for Joseph. He was young, far from home, in a land where no one would hold him accountable. There was no one to watch or stop him. He could have easily said, “Why not? I deserve this. No one will know.”
But instead, the Bible says something very simple, yet incredibly powerful: “But he refused.”
This wasn’t just a quick, emotional reaction. It was a firm decision. Joseph wasn’t just running from a woman—he was running toward holiness. He had already made up his mind that he would honor God, no matter the cost. He refused to sin, not just out of fear of getting caught, but because he knew who he was, and more importantly, he knew who God was.
He said in verse 9, "How then could I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?" That statement reveals the heart behind his decision. Joseph didn’t measure his choices by what he could get away with—he measured them by his relationship with God. That’s what true integrity looks like.
Application:
We live in a world that constantly tells us to follow our feelings, to chase pleasure, and to do what makes us happy—whether or not it’s right. Like Joseph, we are all faced with choices that test our character, especially when no one is watching. Sometimes these choices come in the form of temptation—temptation to cheat, lie, steal, gossip, act out in anger, or cross moral lines for personal gain.
Here’s the truth: our choices matter.
They matter to God, and they shape our future.
You may be thinking, “No one sees what I’m doing, so it won’t matter.” But Joseph teaches us that integrity is about doing what’s right even when no one else is looking. Why? Because God sees. God honors obedience. And even if it seems like saying “no” leads to loss, God is always working behind the scenes.
Joseph’s refusal didn’t bring him immediate reward. In fact, it caused him pain—he was falsely accused and thrown into prison. But that wasn’t the end of his story. God used that very prison to bring him closer to the palace. Joseph eventually became the second most powerful man in Egypt, saving many lives during a famine—including the very brothers who once betrayed him.
If Joseph had said “yes” to Potiphar’s wife, he might have had a moment of pleasure, but he would have missed out on the greater purpose God had for him.
That’s what we need to remember: temporary pleasure can never compare to God’s eternal plan.
Every time we choose righteousness over sin, obedience over rebellion, and God’s will over our own desires, we are walking into the destiny He has prepared for us.
Your choice to honor God today may not look like much to others, but in God’s eyes, it’s a step toward something greater.
Practical Steps:
1. Pre-decide your boundaries. Know where you stand before temptation comes. Joseph didn’t wait until the heat of the moment to decide—his heart was already set on honoring God.
2. Stay close to God’s Word. The more you know God’s heart, the easier it becomes to align your choices with His will.
3. Be accountable. Surround yourself with people who encourage righteousness and speak truth when you are tempted to compromise.
4. Trust God's reward. Choosing right may be hard now, but God sees your sacrifice, and He will bless your obedience in ways you can’t imagine.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for showing us through Joseph that one faithful choice can change everything. Give me the strength to stand firm when I’m tempted, and help me to honor You with every decision I make—whether big or small. I choose You over comfort, truth over lies, and purpose over pleasure. Help me to remember that my choices matter, and they are never wasted in Your hands.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
