Devotional Topic: Faith That Breaks Down Walls
READ: Hebrews 11:17-40
Verse of the Day: Hebrews 11:30
Devotional Message:
(Hebrews 11:30)
"By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the army had marched around them for seven days."
Observation:
This verse is part of a bigger chapter that talks about faith—faith that moves mountains, opens seas, and even breaks down walls. In the story of Jericho, God asked the Israelites to do something unusual. He didn't ask them to attack the city right away. Instead, He told them to march around the city walls once a day for six days, and on the seventh day, they were to march around it seven times. Then they were to blow trumpets and shout loudly. It seemed like a strange battle plan. Normally, soldiers would rely on their weapons and strength to defeat their enemies, but God asked them to rely on faith and obedience.
Can you imagine what the people of Jericho might have thought when they saw the Israelites marching around their city day after day? It must have seemed foolish to them. And maybe, at some point, even the Israelites themselves wondered if it would work. But they trusted God's instructions and followed them exactly. When they shouted on the seventh day, the walls of Jericho fell down flat! The impossible became possible because of their faith in God.
This story shows us that sometimes, God’s ways are different from what we expect or understand. He might ask us to do things that seem strange or even impossible. But when we follow His direction, even if it doesn't make sense to us, we show our faith in Him, and He can do great things in our lives.
Application: We all have walls in our lives—problems or challenges that seem impossible to overcome. Maybe it's a situation at work, a relationship that’s broken, a financial struggle, or a fear that holds you back. Like the walls of Jericho, these challenges can seem too big, too strong, and too impossible to break through. But Hebrews 11:30 teaches us that faith is the key to overcoming these obstacles.
God may not always ask us to walk around our problems like He did with the Israelites, but He does ask us to trust Him and follow His guidance. Just as the Israelites needed to be patient and consistent in their obedience, we too need to be patient in our walk with God. Sometimes, the answers to our prayers don’t come right away, and we may feel like we’re just marching in circles, not getting anywhere. But if we remain faithful and obedient to what God asks us to do, He will move in ways we cannot even imagine.
So, how can we apply this lesson in our daily lives? First, we must listen to God's voice through prayer and reading the Bible. Just like the Israelites received instructions from God on how to defeat Jericho, we also need to seek God's guidance for our challenges. Second, we need to be patient and trust in God's timing. He may not answer our prayers the moment we ask, but He is always working on our behalf. Lastly, we need to take action in faith, believing that God is with us even when the situation seems impossible.
Whatever wall you are facing today, remember that faith in God can bring it down. Your part is to trust Him, be obedient, and never give up, even when you don’t see immediate results. God sees the bigger picture, and when the time is right, He will make a way where there seems to be no way.
Prayer:
Father God, thank You for reminding us that faith can break down even the strongest walls. Help us to trust in Your plans and follow Your guidance, even when we don’t understand. Give us the patience to wait on Your timing and the courage to act in faith. We believe that You can do the impossible in our lives. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
