BECOMING HUMAN IN COVENANT RELATIONSHIPS | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (OCT 29, 2024) with Sign Language

Today is the Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time; in the gospel, Jesus is asked about divorce by his listeners.

And Jesus tells them: It is “because of the hardness of your hearts” that Moses “wrote you [the said] commandment.” To Jesus, a man and a woman, in marriage, are joined by God, making them one flesh; and so “what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” We could go on and on about the reasons why one would like to divorce from the other, but perhaps we could also consider that “hardness of hearts” also refers to, on one hand, our unwillingness to admit our mistake, to seek forgiveness for it, and to commit to reforming ourselves. And, on the other hand, to extend another chance for the other to change.

Jesus concludes his discourse by welcoming children, saying: “Whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” If we look at marriage as a sign of God’s kingdom, how could we accept it as children would? Well, brothers and sisters, a child always has an open heart. Let us learn from the children. Husbands, wives and children can grow in their humanity by being together.
