Today's Devotion:

365 Daily Devotions: Seminary Edition

💁🏻 Concept: Pastor
The term pastor is used interchangeably in the New Testament with elder, overseer, and bishop to refer to the primary leadership office in a local church. Translating the Greek word poimēn (ποιμήν), it means “shepherd.” This highlights the pastor’s role in caring for, feeding, protecting, and guiding God’s flock. A pastor is not a performer or CEO but a servant-leader, called to faithfully preach the Word, lead with humility, and care for souls. He is accountable to God and the congregation, under Christ who is the Chief Shepherd of the Church.

📖 Bible Readings: 1 Peter 5:1-4
(Acts 20:28; Ephesians 4:11-12; 1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9; Hebrews 13:17; John 21:15-17)

👨🏻‍💻 Teachings:
In the New Testament:
1. The term “pastor” is more of a verb, not a title.
2. Every pastor shepherds a flock of sheep.
3. Every sheep functions as a shepherd to others.

💪🏼 Applications:
1. Cling to the role, not to the title.
2. Honor and submit biblically to your shepherds.
3. Be a shepherd by leading others to Jesus.

🎙Discussion:
Why is it important that you have a shepherd at the same time you are also a shepherd to others?

Alternative questions:
1. What have you learned from this devotion?
2. How can you practically apply our devotion?

🙏🏼 Prayer:
Gracious Shepherd, thank You for the gift of pastors who guide, teach, and care for Your people. Strengthen them with wisdom, patience, and boldness as they lead. Help me to honor those You’ve placed in spiritual authority over me. Teach me to listen well, obey Your Word through them, and pray without ceasing for their strength and holiness. May every pastor reflect Your love and truth with humility and joy. And may I follow You, the Chief Shepherd, with all my heart. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
