♦In the early 1500s, one man wore the crowns of Spain, ruled the Netherlands and much of Italy, held claims across central Europe, governed a new empire across the Atlantic, and was elected Holy Roman Emperor on top of it all. His chancellor believed he could turn it into something the world hadn't seen since Rome. On paper, nothing stood in the way. It never happened. Instead, within a single lifetime, the greatest inheritance in European history was deliberately broken in two. How does a family assemble half a continent without fighting for most of it? Why did holding every crown turn out to mean so little? And what was it, in the end, that a man with armies on three fronts and silver from two continents simply could not defeat?
