Daily Bread Devotional:
Devotional Topic: Where Else Can We Go?
READ: John 6:41-7:1
Verse of the Day: John 6:68
Devotional Message:
(John 6:68)
"Simon Peter answered him, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.'"
Observation:
In John 6:68, Peter's words speak volumes about trust and surrender. Imagine the scene: Jesus had just spoken about being the "bread of life," explaining that following Him would involve total commitment and deep faith. Many people found this teaching hard to accept and chose to leave. But when Jesus asked His closest disciples if they wanted to leave as well, Peter responded with this powerful statement. He recognized that there was nowhere else to go for true hope, direction, and eternal life. Only Jesus could meet the needs of their hearts and give them purpose beyond this world.
Peter’s response also reminds us that following Jesus doesn’t mean we always understand everything or that every moment is easy. Even the disciples, who spent every day with Him, sometimes struggled to grasp His teachings. But despite their questions, they knew that no one else could offer what Jesus did. He alone could satisfy their deepest longings, bring peace to their fears, and provide eternal life. Peter’s words are a declaration of loyalty and trust, showing us the power of clinging to Jesus even when life is unclear.
Application: In our lives today, we might sometimes feel lost or unsure, just like the people who heard Jesus speak that day. We face struggles, disappointments, and confusion, and it’s tempting to look elsewhere for answers or relief. Society offers many solutions—self-help, temporary distractions, financial success, popularity. But in the end, these things only offer quick fixes that don’t last.
Like Peter, we are invited to place our trust fully in Jesus, even when it’s hard. The more we grow in faith, the more we realize that only Jesus provides peace, joy, and purpose that last. When we have nowhere else to turn, Jesus is there to give us the strength and hope we need. He speaks words of life, words that go beyond this world. When we face hard decisions, when we feel discouraged, or when we don’t know which way to go, we can remember that Jesus is always with us, and He knows what we need.
Let’s make it a daily practice to go to Jesus first, not as a last resort. Spend time in prayer, read His Word, and let His truth sink deep into your heart. When challenges arise, remind yourself, “Jesus has the words of eternal life; I can trust Him.” Let His love and promises be the foundation of your life.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, we come to You today, acknowledging that only You have the words of eternal life. Help us to seek You first and to trust You even when we don’t understand. Draw us closer to You each day, and remind us that You alone are our source of strength, hope, and peace. Amen.
