♦The Romans called the Mediterranean Mare Nostrum, meaning "our sea". They knew its weather, its coastlines, its islands, and currents. They knew how to sail it and how to build impressive ships. However, beyond the Pillars of Hercules, (Gibraltar) lay an infinite sea which The Romans never tried to cross...and ocean which today we know it covers roughly a fifth of the Earth's surface
For an empire that built roads across continents and engineering works we still study today, why didn't Rome explore the Atlantic... is worth explaining.
