I've travelled all over the world and I have NEVER been treated like this at an airport. This is my first time flying internationally out of Terminal 1 at NAIA Airport in Manila — I'm normally at Terminal 2 or Terminal 3. I was standing in the Starbucks line, put my backpack down and was putting my immigration papers away, when a man in his late 50s started talking to me. I had headphones in, so I took them out to be polite — and the first thing out of his mouth was a threat. Then he accused me of staring at his wife. It escalated from there: he kept coming back up to me, kept making threats, and wouldn't calm down. His wife eventually pulled him away.
Afterwards I walked to my gate, which happened to be right in the area he'd headed toward, so I kept my phone out for evidence in case he came back. I also reached out to my contacts with the airport police to file an incident report — behaviour like that at NAIA Airport puts everyone at risk, not just me. It also reminded me of that viral video from a few days ago of two Americans getting into a fist fight at Manila Airport and getting kicked off their flights.
